Customizing your kiteboard, because why not?!

Unleash your inner board artist

Your kitesurfing board is more than just a piece of gear—it’s an extension of your personality. So why ride a plain, factory-stock board when you can customize it? Whether you want to enhance performance, make it look ridiculously cool, or turn your twintip or directional into a standout, there are plenty of ways to do it. And I know it because look at this beauty.

Paint it like you mean it

A custom paint job can turn any board into a masterpiece. You can use surf paint sticks, spray paint from the hardware store, or just good old-fashioned paint. There are so many ways to make your board stand out. But to make it a bit easier for you, here are a few tips I learned from experience.

  • Choose the right paint: Acrylic or marine-grade spray paint works best for durability.

  • Sand and prime: A smooth surface helps the paint stick better and prevents your artwork from washing off the first time you hit the water.

  • Get creative: Go wild with colors, stencils, or even glow-in-the-dark designs. Maybe take a photo of your board and sketch on it first to plan your masterpiece.

  • Protect your work: A clear coat will keep your masterpiece from chipping off after the first wipeout. For example, SurfPaints pens are not waterproof—always good to add an extra protective layer.

Upgrade your fins for next-level performance

Stock fins? Basic. Custom fins? Legendary. Fins impact speed, grip, and control, so upgrading them can transform your ride.

  • Larger fins: More stability and better upwind performance.

  • Smaller fins: Loose, playful feel for tricks and slides.

  • G10 or carbon fins: Lighter, stronger, and built for high-performance riding.

  • Asymmetrical fins: Because who doesn’t love experimenting with new setups? Think Orca Fins.

Directional boards have even more fin options to play with:

  • Quad fin setup: More drive and grip, perfect for carving.

  • Thruster setup: A balanced feel with maneuverability for waves.

  • Twin fin setup: Looser, skate-like feeling for playful riding.

Your board needs to have the right fin boxes to support different setups, so make sure it’s compatible before making changes.

The flexibility of your fins also affects your ride:

  • Stiff fins: More direct power transfer, better for high speeds and aggressive riding.

  • Flexible fins: More forgiving, offering a smoother and more playful feel, especially in choppy water.

The fun thing is that you can switch it up. Maybe even customize the fins—paint them, choose an amazing color. It can also make your board stand out, so you always know which one is yours!

Stay connected: stickers, trackers, and tags

Lost your board? Make sure it finds its way back. It also helps the coast guard. If you lose your board and have a lost-and-found sticker with your number, they can call you to check if you just lost your board or if they still need to search for you.

  • Lost and found stickers: A simple sticker with your contact details can save you from heartbreak. The Dutch coast guard even has beautiful ones!

  • GPS trackers: Apple AirTags or other waterproof trackers keep an eye on your board, even when it goes on its own adventure.

  • QR codes: Link it to your socials or a contact page for an easy return process.

  • Waterproof marker: Just want to slap your number and name on the board? A waterproof marker does the trick. Beautiful? Not so much. Practical? Absolutely!

Brands that bring your vision to life

Not into DIY? Some brands let you customize your board straight from the factory. How cool is that?! Maybe it makes resale a bit harder—or better—because it’s one of a kind.

  • Lieuwe: Offers full custom graphics, colors, and even personalized engravings. I’ve seen some amazing ones out there!

  • Appletree: Lets you tweak board shapes, constructions, and designs to fit your style. A perfect board just for you. This one is definitely on the list! Especially because they make amazing directional boards. And this want-to-be wave rider needs more!

  • Other Options: Some brands offer custom footpads, straps, or even kite designs if you want to take personalization beyond just the board. Maybe your brand can be on the board? Hmm… a Berito board could be cool…

Your board, your rules

Customizing your board isn’t just about looks—it’s about making it perform exactly how you want. Whether you’re adding fresh graphics, tweaking the fins, or slapping on a lost-and-found sticker, your board should be as unique as your riding style.

So go ahead, make your board scream ‘you.’ Just don’t blame Berito when your kite buddies start asking for design tips.
