How to survive no-wind days
For non-kiters, the answer to "What do you do when there's no wind?" is simple. But for us kitesurfers, those windless days are pure agony. Even after two weeks of non-stop kiting, when our bodies are begging for mercy, we still want more wind. Let’s face it, we’re a little addicted.
Sure, every once in a while, a windless day is a blessing. It gives our bodies some much-needed rest, lets us catch up with friends and family, and allows us to plan our next adventure. But did you know that you can actually survive these no-wind days—or even weeks—without losing your mind?
Chase the wind
The most obvious solution is to search for windier places around the globe. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, unless you’ve got a bottomless bank account, this plan can quickly lead to maxed-out credit cards and debts. So, proceed with caution!
Try kitefoiling or wingfoiling
If there’s not enough wind for your usual kitesurfing, why not give kitefoiling or wingfoiling a go? Even in lighter winds, you can still get out on the water. Plus, it’s a great way to broaden your horizons and get that sweet, sweet dopamine rush from a session.
Get your life in order for the next windy days
Let’s be honest—when the wind’s blowing, life gets chaotic. Meals become an afterthought, plans with non-kiting friends get canceled, and your fridge is probably emptier than your wind forecast app on a calm day. Use the downtime to stock up on groceries, catch up with friends and family, and get everything in order so you’re ready to drop everything when the wind picks up again.
Give your body some love
On windy days, your body takes a beating. There’s always that one muscle that’s sore, tight, or just not cooperating. Use these windless days to stretch, do some low-impact exercises, and work on strengthening those weaker areas. That way, when the wind returns, your body will be ready to keep up with your kite-induced antics.
And let’s not forget about nutrition. If you’ve been surviving on quick snacks and energy bars during your sessions, now’s the time to get back into a routine of healthy eating. Fuel up so you’re ready to crush it when the wind is back.
Clean and check your gear
We all know the routine—pack up your gear after a session and unpack it just in time for the next one. But your kites, bars, boards, and wetsuits could use some love, too. Take this windless opportunity to clean everything up and check for any damage. There’s nothing worse than getting pumped for a session only to find a giant leak in your leading edge.
Prep for your next trick
Windy days can be so hectic that there’s little time to focus on mastering new tricks. Use the downtime to watch tutorial videos, visualize your next move, and write down key points to remember. If you use a GoPro during your sessions, review the footage. Sure, make a killer Instagram reel for the likes, but also take note of where you can improve. That way, when the wind returns, you’ll be ready to land that trick like a boss.
Final thoughts
A long stretch of no-wind days can definitely take a toll on your mental health. But with the right mix of activities, you can survive this. Just remember, the wind will be back, and when it is, you’ll be ready—mentally, physically, and with all your gear in tip-top shape.
